Book Review: Hustle Like A West African

It is no secret that West Africa is the hub of the big names in the African Continent and in the world. When looking at the list of great athletes, musicians, entrepreneurs and etc. a West African name will definitely be among the names on the list, or even worse, at the top of the list. We talk about names such as Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Aliko Dangote, Davido, Didier Drogba just to name a few. These are some of the people who continue to raise the bar, investing in great branding and reflecting the authentic faces of the world around us.

The question is: are they dominating by chance?

What is their winning formula? There are many books I have read that attempt to answers this question, and to add to the list is “Hustle! Like a West African by Edwin Ngwane. The book talks about how West Africans have managed to dominate and have had so much influence in Africa over the years. The author is exceptionally articulate in this statistics and research-supported study of West Africans who have dominated in the fields of music, sports, business and politics just to name a few. He says that more often than not, people pay attention on who is successful, and too little attention on how they got their success. If you are interested in reviewing and emulating successful people, you definitely have to take a leaf from how the West Africans do it.

In the book, the author shares a personal experience of his life brought by the entire perspective of life in a typical African set. Throughout the book, he recites the stories and advices of African icons that has helped him tackle the aspects of being a goal getter and crafting the art of doing it differently from the rest. Edwin shares acumens of different successful African to help readers do it the West African way. His point of view is to never doubt yourself and your abilities. He encourages readers to believe in themselves and to discover things they love to do and those which come easy to them.
